Nightwater: Dark Thicket Minigame Guide

This guide is for anyone who’s poked around the Dark Thicket, gotten a little dust, and then hit a wall where progress feels painfully slow. If you already know the Elder Woods routine by heart, you can probably skip ahead to the milestones section.

The Dark Thicket is minigame one of Nightwater, and it plays like an incremental tree-chopping game. You enter, chop trees, bank resources, and spend them on upgrades that scale infinitely and carry permanent bonuses back into the main game.

Here’s the resource breakdown before we get into the route:

Resource Source Notes
Wood Dust Starting trees Base currency, feeds early upgrades
Resin White Forest trees Needed for base damage upgrades
Wood Bark Dark Forest trees High-level resource
Elder Wood The big tree in Elder Woods Required for end-tier upgrades

The Dark Thicket has three main directions you’ll explore: the starting trees for base dust, the White Forest for Resin and much better dust rates, and the Dark Forest for Wood Bark. Later you’ll hit the Elder Woods at the very end. If you’ve played the Volcano Minigame in this game, the structure will feel familiar — a self-contained loop that feeds permanent bonuses into your main save.

Early Loop: Buy Damage, Then Time, Then Hold Down Chop

The first thing I wish I’d known is that the timer matters more than raw damage at the very start. Each run gives you roughly 15–20 seconds, and you need to make every second count.

  1. Enter the Dark Thicket and chop the starting trees to collect Wood Dust. Your first ~11 dust is enough for a couple of upgrades.
  2. Choose between damage or extra time. Buy damage first, then go back in.
  3. More damage means you clear trees faster inside that short window.
  4. Return to upgrades and buy max time (+5 seconds). Re-enter — the timer is now around 25 seconds.
  5. You can just hold down the chop input. Get as close to the next tree as possible while moving.
  6. Keep banking Wood Dust. At 5,453 more Wood Dust you unlock a 15% chance to receive double items when manually destroying a tree.
  7. Priority big upgrade: +2 resource gain to all resources. Also consider the big wood storage upgrade.
  8. Buy Area of Effect when affordable. Destroying one tree deals a little damage to nearby trees — weak at first, but it has a big impact later.

Tip: Don’t sleep on the time gain ability. It gives your timer 0.1 seconds for every tree felled, which quietly adds up over a long run.

Poison Build: Hit Each Tree Once and Move On

This is the build that changed the grind for me. Instead of finishing one tree at a time, you spread poison and let it do the work.

  1. In the Area of Effect upgrade branch you can pick Radius or Damage. Then unlock Poison.
  2. With Poison, trees you hit become infected and keep taking damage. Move on to a new tree each time instead of finishing one, because the poison spreads damage around.
  3. Poison plus AoE makes resource gain add up much faster — I was hitting 40 dust quickly once this clicked.
  4. Buy AoE Radius and base damage to help poison the surrounding trees. One hit per tree is often enough.
  5. Poison base damage is separate from your axe damage. Buy the poison base damage upgrade (10 base damage) when available.
  6. Buy more time on the clock whenever you can’t afford anything else, then re-enter.
  7. Upgrade poison duration so the infection lasts longer.
  8. Key axe upgrade: axe scale damage per hit by +50 instead of +10. Well worth it.
  9. Later, unlock the Double Poison Damage ability and the Weakness passive (trees struck permanently receive +80% more damage).

White Forest Farming: Resin and Faster Dust

Once you can actually kill white trees, this becomes your dust engine. They have much higher health, so early on you can’t destroy them yet — keep farming base trees and buying base damage until you can.

  1. Head to the White Forest. These trees take real time to bring down at first.
  2. Resin drops from the white trees.
  3. With a base damage increase, white trees go down quickly, and AoE poison spreads to nearby trees.
  4. White trees give roughly 20x the resources of normal trees, which give about 3–4x. They are significantly better for dust.
  5. Base damage upgrades cost Resin as well as dust — farm Resin here to afford them.
  6. Wood Fortune from white trees doesn’t affect the thicket but does affect the main game.
  7. Once you’re too strong for the White Forest, it becomes your old farming spot — you can fully clear it in a single timer.

Dark Forest and Elder Woods: Wood Bark and the Big Tree

The Dark Forest is where things get serious. Those darker trees are very strong at first, and you’ll need much better gear to take them on.

  1. Explore the Dark Forest. They hit hard and take a beating early on.
  2. Dark Forest trees drop Wood Bark, the next high-level resource.
  3. Dark Forest trees give about 22 Wood Dust plus a few bark — roughly the same dust as white trees. Stick to white trees for dust and use the Dark Forest for Wood Bark.
  4. The trees at the very end are the Elder Woods.
  1. There’s a big tree in the Elder Woods with a large health pool. You must destroy it to get Elder Wood. My early attempts failed badly — you need way more than half its health in extra damage.
  2. Strategy for the big tree: activate Rage before throwing axes, then focus it. The Weakness passive permanently debuffs it, so each attempt leaves it with less effective health.
  3. Once you can destroy it, you get Elder Wood, and the remaining upgrades unlock. Elder Wood is required for most of the end-tier upgrades.
  4. After beating the tree, you can farm the Elder Woods for a lot of dust — I was pulling around 4.6k per run.

Warning: Don’t burn your whole run on the big tree if you can’t finish it. Chip away, let the permanent Weakness debuff stack, and come back stronger.

Abilities, Berserk, and the Axe Throw

These two skills are your burst tools, and upgrading them properly makes farming noticeably faster.

  1. Unlock the axe skill, which throws axes in a certain direction. Default key is Q. It has a long cooldown but does good damage.
  2. Unlock the Berserk skill. Default key is F. While active it increases movement speed and resource gain by 50%.
  3. Upgrade Berserk duration (+1 second, then more) and buy the Berserk skill upgrades.
  4. Buy the axe cooldown skill and fully upgrade it — reduced cooldown dramatically improves farming speed.
  5. Buy cooldown reduction on kill passive: cooldown is reduced for every tree felled.
  6. Unlock Stackable Axe Skill Damage: permanently grants +10 axe skill base damage every 50 trees felled.
  7. Unlock Stackable Berserk Skill Duration: permanently increases Berserk duration by +0.5 seconds for every 50 trees felled.
  8. Unlock Stackable Radius: permanently grants +1 meter of radius for every 50 trees felled.
  9. Unlock permanent resource gain: permanently increases by +2% for every 50 trees felled.
  10. Remember to activate Rage before throwing axes to maximize damage.

Milestones and Permanent Main-Game Bonuses

This is the part that makes the whole minigame worth grinding. Many Dark Thicket upgrades give permanent bonuses to the main game, and a lot of them are infinite or stackable.

Milestone Effect Cost / Trigger
Double item chance 15% chance for double items when manually destroying a tree 5,453 Wood Dust
Resource gain +2 resource gain to all resources Priority upgrade
Forest Luck 30% chance to receive double items Third or fourth progression tier
Tree Altar Slowly generates wood 100,000 dust
Woodcutter building speed Faster woodcutter 60k
Heart of Elder Permanently increases drop rate End-tier upgrade
Resource total +25% total resources received in the Dark Thicket Permanent upgrade

Other unlocks I picked up along the way:

  • Time gain ability: timer gains 0.1 seconds for every tree felled
  • Permanently reduces the time between axe swings
  • Increase the amount of time exploring
  • Weakness passive: trees struck permanently receive +80% more damage
  • Cooldown reduction on kill passive
  • Double poison damage ability
  • Fast-operating wood harvester
  • Totem that restricts resource spawns in its effect area to trees only
  • Movement speed upgrades (multiple levels)
  • Sprint upgrade (multiple levels) — I grabbed this before moving to main game episode 2

Note: All remaining upgrades require Elder Wood, so the big tree is your real gate. Everything before that is just building toward it.

The Dark Thicket is designed to be ground out over a long period. Between the stackable bonuses and the permanent main-game gains, it’s one of those systems where a little consistency beats a single marathon session. Get your damage and time upgrades rolling, spread poison, farm white trees for dust and Resin, then chip down that big elder tree until it finally falls.
