Magic The Gathering Arena: Recommended Historic Brawl Deck

Just some Historic brawl deck I have fun with, if you are new and want to get into historic brawl yourself

Historic Brawl (or lite commander)

My personal favorite format in arena. It allow you to play with 100 card singleton(basic land don’t count) deck with a commander( a key card you always have access to, regardless of what your hands has). With that, funny, quirky deck to brutal deck can be created. I am just going to share a few of my favorite here if your to give you ideas of the type of deck that are run.

Emry, Lurker of the Loch

A personal favorite, mostly down to the fact that killing Emry is rather ineffective, as you will just cast more artifact, reduce her cost down to one blue mana, and cast it regardless, so it very likely they will run out of kills spell before you run out of artifact and mana to cast Emry.

Once you are able to play emry after casting cheap artifact, your goal is to find one of the several win condition of the deck, being that of Paradox engine and a few mana rocks, allowing you to keep untapping Emry so she can continue to cast(and hopeful draw) card while gaining mana per cast( double tap q to tap all your land and mana rock). After which you look for your second combo piece, atherflux reserviour, gain over 50 life, and kill them dead on the spot. If that path of victory is not possible, Folio of fancy is perfectly capable of milling them out.

Previous iteration of the deck had spells that turn all your artifact into either a artifact on the field or all 4/4 creature, but I removed it to make room for more artifact because it a bit of a feels bad to have emry mill the only few non-artifact in the deck. Feel free to re add those card to your deck list if you feel it is needed.Despite that, it run some counter spell because why not, it very good interaction. The pact of negation is specifically their to protect you comboing off, so try to use it as such.

Also this deck is running a few less land then a normal deck, but that because of all the mana rock that litter the deck, it more likely you will have a artifact to cast in place of a land drop of worse come to worse, but add more land to your needs.

Final note is that there are two artifact tutor in the deck, use it to find aetherflux, doesn’t matter if it get counter or destroyed, as emry is just going to let you recast it over and over until it sticks.(if it get exile, suck to suck, time to beat them to death with metalwork colossus or die trying)

Prone dying quickly, but 50 damage to the face damage is always fun.

Lagrella, the Magpie(aka, the bounce house)

A fun spin on the usual blink commander, Lagrella allows you to target one creature of each side of the field. It very useful to target both your own creature and the creature your opponent just played, exile them both, and call it a day. If they like Lagrella, your creature come back stronger and the most of deck creature have enter the battlefield effect, so you can double up on it.

This deck is just plain value, with just enough interaction to make your opponent wish they were playing another format. And if your opponent happens to gain a lead, well their are some board wipes to help fix the opponent lead. Just try to win before your opponent plays something that you cannot deal with and you should be fine.

With the amount of flicker and enter the battlefield effect in the deck, even if they kill your creature, you already got their value off. The only change I would recommend changing in the deck list is adding more utility spell that don’t rely on etb, such as card draw or ramp, because the only way your doing that currently is with creature.

Baral, Chief of Compliance(The deck that can cause suffering)

Baral deck is a simple deck, if your opponent is doing something, you put a stop to it. Casting their commander, ramp spell, bomb, all of it will not resolve. Heck, if I have the card advantage and mana, I will also counter spell their 1 mana creature, not because that the correct play, but to send a message, that being that you are in for a very long game.

Because this is a 1v1 format(for now), trading 1 for 1 is not as painful as in a 4 player game. Plus the deck is packed with card draw and other method of gaining advantage that you will not run out of card if you play patiently. The only weakness of this deck is very cheap threat that is played before your counter spell are ready, or the mirror match, because it a bit stressful to be honest. But luckily for the cheap threat that comes in early(ie Kinnan) the deck has a few enchantment aura that can effectively neuter that threat, as long as you don’t block and kill it, it going to stay their until your opponent deals with it( if you allow them to)

I will admit, this is a deck that is in the hell queue, but luckily for you, this deck eat greedy value deck for breakfast, as long you counter anything relevant, and draw into one of the bombs of the deck, you should be able to win.

Yawgmoth, Thran Physician (the BBEG of old magic)

Yawgmoth, his influence over the story of magic is undeniable, and as a card, he is very strong. His ability is to sacrifice creature to both slowly whittle away your opponent while also giving you card draw is the key ability we will be using.

The goal is to sacrifice small but persistent creature to yawgmoth to draw card and debuff or outright kill your opponent creature. The life loss can be stop by having a creature or enchantment effect that give you life on creature death, allow you to use the ability as long as you have the creature to sacrifice( note that yawgmoth does not need to target a creature, and he doesn’t need to target your opponent creature if need be). The goal is to drain out the opponent with a effect like that, get the enchantment nest of scarab onto the field so each -1/-1 you place give you another creature to kill off. Other win condition is to use the excess amount of mana that you have laying around(somehow, their are method in the deck, don’t worry) and discarding a card to proliferate the one plane walker in the deck for her to use the ultimate ability the turn she comes out.

Being a mono black deck, it is surprisingly able to fight off some of the stronger deck in the format, like any of them that relies on small creatures. Regardless, playing as the BBEG of the game past bring sense of villainy to ones ego, so embrace it, and embrace phyrexia god.
