Nowak

Nowak is the starting character and must be brought on every run, often used to generate other pigments by dealing damage. Nowak is also the only companion without a slap, instead replaced with a high-damage shuffling ability.
Boyle
The Veteran

Tutorial
Unlocked in the tutorial.
Boyle is a high-damage tank companion, capable of damaging multiple targets at once and shielding himself and others from damage.
Hans
The Severed
Role(s): Support
Area 1
Tutorial
Unlocked in the tutorial.
Hans is a support powerhouse, capable of debuffing enemies and massive healing. However, she has low health and is incapable of dealing damage outside of her slap.
Anton
The Gambler
Role(s): Damage, utility
Area 1
Normal mode
Unlocked by paying Anton 10 coins. This is cumulative between runs.
Anton is an inconsistent but well-rounded companion. His abilities include a random-value damage ability, rupture debuff, and a pigment shuffling ability. Despite his inconsistencies, he has great utility when working alongside others.
Splig
The Conjoined

Normal mode
Unlocked by abandoning or getting a party member killed before speaking to them.
Splig is a healing-oriented companion with the ability to change the health bar color of enemies and allies.
Pearl
The Glutton
Role(s): Damage, tank
Area 1
Normal mode
Unlocked by completing 40 combat encounters before speaking to her. This is cumulative between runs. Before the unlock requirement is met, the player will be talking to a skeleton named Markus instead.
Pearl is capable of dealing absolutely massive damage, with a relatively small small self-sustain ability.
Thype
The Trickster
Role(s): Support, damage
Area 1
Normal mode
Unlocked by defeating all Area 1 bosses before talking to him.
Thype is a healer with massive single-target healing potential. He is also capable of rupturing enemies.
Griffin
The Naked
Role(s): Damage
Area 1
Hard mode
Unlocked by completing 3 combat encounters without taking damage before speaking to him.
Griffin is a high-risk high-reward companion, capable of granting themselves Spotlight. While under the Spotlight, Griffin deals and receives double damage. If Griffin dies while under the Spotlight, it transfers to the unit that killed him.
Arnold
The Failure
Role(s): Support, damage
Area 1
Hard mode
Unlocked by refusing to make fun of Arnold in hard mode.
Arnold is a pathetic loser. He cries, has panic attacks, and helplessly flails at enemies.
Dimitri
The Incinerated
Role(s): Damage
Area 1
Hard mode
Interact with a specific campfire in Area 1.
Dimitri specializes in setting fire to the enemy field. He is especially strong against enemies that have multiple turns.
LongLiver
The Parasite
Role(s): Damage, utility
Area 2
Normal mode
Each time a party member dies, the chance to unlock LongLiver when speaking to him increases by 3%. This chance persists through runs.
LongLiver is a high-damage companion that passively constricts opposing enemies.
Clive
The Stoic
Role(s): Tank, utility, damage
Area 2
Normal mode
Unlocked by speaking to Clive three times.
Clive is a self-sustaining tank with the ability to cleanse debuffs on himself, constrict enemies, and deal large amounts of damage at the cost of a high amount of pigment.
Kleiver
The Zealot
Role(s): Damage
Area 2
Normal mode
Unlocked by Speaking to him after killing 20 music men before they transform. This is cumulative between runs.
Kleiver is a high-damage companion, with abilities that chain attacks together and ignore shield.
Cranes
The Corpse
Role(s): Support
Area 2
Normal mode
Unlocked by getting 20 party members killed before speaking to him. This is cumulative between runs.
Cranes is capable of extreme healing at the cost of their own health. They also have a once-per-battle self-heal, and the ability to cleanse curse on allies.
Agon
The Terminal
Role(s): Support, utility
Area 2
Hard mode
Unlocked by speaking to Agon after having zero companion deaths so far in the run.
Agon is a strong support and utility companion with the ability to shuffle enemies and resurrect allies. He has a massive health pool, but takes permanent damage.
Rags
The Psychic
Role(s): Utility, damage
Area 2
Hard mode
Unlocked by “slaying” an Ungod, which can spawn from the body bag enemies.
Rags is a unique companion, centering entirely around applying Linked to enemies, hurting herself, and self-sustaining. Upon taking damage, she distributes that damage to all Linked enemies.
Smoke Stacks
The Black Lung
Role(s): Utility, support, damage
Area 2
Hard mode
Every time the player discards an item, the chance to recruit Smoke Stacks upon speaking to them increases by 1%. This is cumulative between runs.
Smoke Stacks is a versatile companion capable of managing pigment, creating shield, and dealing damage to all enemies on the field.
Leviat
The Mass
Role(s): Damage, utility, support
Area 3
Hard mode
Unlocked by speaking to Leviat with Hans in your party.
Leviat is a well-rounded companion that deals damage to themselves and allies to cast their strong abilities.
Bimini
The Immortal
Role(s): Damage
Area 3
Hard mode
Unlocked by paying Bimini 50 coins at once. This is not cumulative between runs.
Bimini is an immensely strong and immortal companion, but upon taking damage, that damage is dealt to the entire party.
Gospel
The Magnum Opus
Role(s): Utility, tank, support
Area 3
Hard mode
Unlocked by speaking to Gospel with Nowak as the only party member.
Gospel can refresh allies’ abilities, suicide into a party-wide-heal, and tank damage. It is inanimate, therefore incapable of leveling, healing, or being ruptured.
