“We’re happy to announce that we will soon begin testing the long-awaited feature that will allow users to change their PlayStation Network Online ID from their PlayStation 4 system.”
Sony has confirmed that the long request PSN Online ID change functionality is coming soon. Sony will be testing the PSN ID Change functionality first as part of their PlayStation Preview Program, available only to those who’ve registered as testers for the program.
Although testers will be able to change their IDs as many times as they want, when the service releases only the first name change will be free. After that users will be charged €9.99/£7.99 while for PlayStation Plus members it will cost €4.99/£3.99.
Sony also explained how the service will work. Users will be able to display their old IDs alongside their new ones so their friends can recognize them, this can be opted out of obviously, however this can only be adjusted when changing your ID.
The service was also stated to be compatible with games published after 1st April 2018 and a large majority of other popular games published before the date. Sony did warn that not all games are guaranteed to work across the PS4, PS3 and PS Vita, probably due to how user IDs were structured by PSN and used by games, one of the reasons it took so long for the service to arrive. Sony will release a list of compatible games soon.
