An introduction to the stats in the game, what affects them, the consequences of them, and how to maintain them with minimal spending.
The Stat HUD, Explained
A few minor stats are not indicated on the HUD, but still affect gameplay:
- Charisma/Hygiene
- Drunkenness
Cat/Dog Affiliation
This stat displays your leanings toward either Team Dog or Team Cat.
NPCs in town residing on the same team as you (visible as an icon next to their name) will give you a discount on purchases, and will purchase items from you for a higher price. A higher leaning toward a team will give you a greater discount from that team’s NPCs, but will not affect prices from NPCs on the opposing team.
Your team leaning changes based on your accrued Dog and Cat points. Dog and Cat points cancel each other out: earning Cat points will shift your team leaning from Dog to Cat, and vice versa.
Dog/Cat points can be earned via the following methods:
- Completing side-quests (variable, gives points toward the team the quest giver resides on)
- Interacting with town NPCs in their animal forms (variable (such as +1 or +10), awarded per night for the first NPC interacted with in their animal form)
- Performing an Offering at a Shrine (+2 points, costs £100)
Shrine Offerings should be avoided due to their high price.
Stress
This stat displays your Stress level, indicated by the picture of Naomi becoming increasingly irritated. Visually, there are three different stress levels.
A slightly miffed Naomi
Having too high of a Stress level may cause a Headache (disease), which halves your max Awakeness.
Stress can increase via the following actions (non-comprehensive):
- Reaching 0 Fullness (+5 Stress)
- Using the Warp Home function via the World Map (variable, depending on the distance from home (such as +5 for for close distances, +25 for medium distances))
Stress can decrease via the following actions:
- Drinking drinks with the Stress Relief property (such as tea or alcohol)
- Receiving Headache treatment at the Veterinary Clinic, or taking Headache medicine
Tea leaves can be commonly obtained from crates or (non-white) barrels, which can be broken open after obtaining the Sheep Flute early on in Route A.
Healthiness
This stat indicates how Healthy you are.
A lower Healthiness level increases your susceptibility for the following diseases:
Can be obtained from being in the rain. Halves your Stamina (run meter).
Can be obtained by eating food. Halves your Fullness.
Can be obtained by picking up objects. Decreases your Attack.
It seems like diseases can be caught starting with a Healthiness level of 75% or lower.
Healthiness decreases naturally over time. Having poor hygiene (by not engaging in beauty care, taking showers, or grooming in boxes as a cat) appears to increase the rate at which your Healthiness decreases.
Healthiness can be recovered via the following actions:
- Eating foods with the Healthy property (such as salads)
- Taking items that treat Healthiness-related diseases
- Getting medical treatment at the Veterinary Clinic
Diseases can be treated via the following actions:
- Taking items that treat disease
- Getting treatment at the Veterinary Clinic
Ingredients for salads, which restore Healthiness, can be easily obtainable from gardens across the map, as well as from crates or barrels (which can be broken open after obtaining the Sheep Flute early on in Route A).
Herbs, which can be grown from seeds littered around the map, can also be traded for vegetables at certain merchants.
Treatment at the clinic is highly advised against due to the very high price (£100 per disease). Instead, medicine can be purchased for £25, or can be concocted for £10. However, due to the large amount of ingredients needed, concocting the medicine is not recommended.
Medicine should always be taken with high Healthiness and low Stress, as it’s possible for Naomi to get the disease again immediately after getting cured. Toothache medicine may cure a toothache, but cause it again from consuming it; going out in the rain may cause another cold right after taking some cold medicine; and another headache may be caused by high stress immediately after taking headache medicine.
Fullness
This stat indicates how hungry you are.
Reaching 0/1 Fullness increases your Stress by 5 points and slowly drains your Vitality. This state is accompanied by squiggly lines radiating from Naomi’s stomach.
Fullness decreases naturally over time.
Fullness can be recovered via the following actions:
- Eating foods with the Stomach Satiation property (variable)
- Hunting animals in cat form (+10 Fullness per animal; drops are still obtained as normal)
Hunting animals in cat form can increase increase Fullness for free, particularly when you’re outside and don’t have enough money to unlock any outdoor kitchens.
Jacket Potatoes are also a good food option, as potatoes are easily obtainable from gardens across the map.
Vitality
Represents Naomi’s HP.
Upon losing all your Vitality, you suffer a Game Over, losing half the funds in your wallet and respawning at the Veterinary Clinic with max Vitality. Your bank account balance is unaffected.
Vitality decreases upon taking damage, and slowly drains with low Fullness.
Vitality can be recovered via the following actions:
- Eating foods with the HP Recovery property (such as sautes)
- Using First Aid Kits
- Using Concoctions
- Getting treatment at the Veterinary Clinic
Deluxe and Awesome First Aid Kits can be obtained by breaking open crates and barrels (possible after obtaining the Sheep Flute from the beginning of Route A). Although Compact First Aid Kits are purchasable, due to their low HP recovery, they aren’t recommended.
Although the sautes available by default restore HP, the amount of HP recovered is low. Completing certain side quests can provide recipes that provide much larger HP recovery with few ingredients.
Due to the risk of monetary loss from suffering a Game Over, having large amounts of money in your wallet is not recommended. Special care should be taken in combat, as you can still be attacked during the shrine teleportation transitions or the disposal menu from carrying too many items.
In extreme conditions (low vitality with no money or resources), it may be a good idea to deposit all your money into your bank account and intentionally aggro an enemy. Do note, however, that although Vitality and Awakeness will be restored, diseases will not be healed, and you may end up catching a cold while respawning in the Veterinary Clinic.
Awakeness
This stat indicates how tired you are.
Upon reaching 0 Awakeness, you suffer a Game Over, losing half the funds in your wallet and respawning at home with max Awakeness. Your bank account balance is unaffected.
Awakeness decreases naturally over time.
Awakeness can be recovered via the following actions:
- Sleeping at home or in tents (available after completing the first outdoor kitchen side quest)
- Drinking Ded Bull
- Consuming foods with the Awakening property (such as tea)
- Consuming concoctions
Tea leaves (and rarely Ded Bull) can be acquired by breaking open crates and barrels after obtaining the Sheep Flute (acquired early on in Route A).
Due to the risk of monetary loss from suffering a Game Over, having large amounts of money in your wallet is not recommended.
Charisma/Hygiene
This is a hidden stat, indicating how well you’re keeping up with your personal hygiene.
Failing to properly maintain your personal hygiene can result in increased shop prices (indicated by an in-game message).
Your Hygiene level decreases naturally over time. Neglecting your hygiene for long enough results in a drop in Charisma.
Hygiene and Charisma can be recovered via the following actions:
- Taking a shower or engaging in beauty care at home
- Grooming in boxes in cat form
Max Hygiene is indicated by a sparkling effect around Naomi. With extremely low Hygiene multiple rounds of showers or beauty care may be necessary for the sparkling effect to appear.
Drunkenness
This is a semi-hidden stat, indicating how Drunk you are. When Tipsy or Drunk, bubbles will float out of Naomi’s mouth.
As you consume alcohol, you will first become Tipsy, and then Drunk. These conditions alter your stats, but the specifics of the alterations are unknown.
Drinking may result in Alcoholism (disease), while drinking too much will result in a Game Over, causing Naomi to black out and respawn at home while also losing half the funds in her wallet. Bank account funds are untouched.
After consuming alcohol, your Drunkenness level decreases naturally over time. If you are Drunk, you will eventually become Tipsy, and if you’re Tipsy, you will eventually become sober.
Drunkenness can also be decreased by:
- Consuming DrinKING
- Receiving the Alcoholism treatment at the Veterinary Clinic
Drunkenness can only be increased by purchasing and consuming alcohol.
